Notes

Dr. Nancie J. Hudson is a critical scholar who studies the performance of identity in social interaction. Her research has been published in the Journal of Family Communication, the Journal of Loss and Trauma, Text & Talk: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Language, Discourse & Communication Studies, and the International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Formerly a professional writer who wrote news and feature articles for newspapers and magazines, Dr. Hudson changed careers after volunteering to teach writing workshops in her local community. Previously she taught writing and rhetoric at the University of Colorado and taught public speaking and interpersonal communication at the University of South Florida. At USF, she received the Provost’s Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Graduate Teaching Assistant.

Since joining the Communication Studies faculty at Cal Poly, Dr. Hudson has been studying diversity and inclusion issues in higher education. She uses inclusive teaching practices to create a supportive learning environment where all students will feel welcome and respected regardless of differences in social identity. Her teaching practices were formally recognized by her colleagues when she received the COMS Department Outstanding GE Educator Award in 2021.

In her free time, she enjoys exploring small towns, parks and beaches on the California coast, going to farmer’s markets and festivals, reading books, and watching movies.
