Notes

Dr. Joshua Losoya joined Cal Poly’s Department of Communication Studies in the fall of 2024. As a full-time lecturer, he teaches primarily COMS 1101: Public Speaking and (occasionally) COMS 2205: Rhetorical Studies.
Prior to joining Cal Poly, Dr. Losoya earned his PhD in Communication (Rhetoric) from the University of Washington and an MA in English (Composition & Rhetoric) from Salisbury University. He has experience with first-year writing instruction, upper-division rhetoric courses, and secondary education (8th grade Language Arts). His doctoral dissertation received the Outstanding Dissertation Award from UW’s Department of Communication. This research was presented during the Twenty-Fifth Biennial Conference of the International Society for the History of Rhetoric at the University of Copenhagen (Denmark).

An article presenting his dissertation’s core findings has recently been accepted for publication in the journal Classical Philology (The University of Chicago Press). His research interests are in the history of rhetoric, the history of ideas, continental philosophy, and critical theory. He is also interested more generally in the early history of Plato’s Academy and the history of the dialectic art. He is especially passionate about helping students develop practical rhetorical skills through a “Learn by Doing” approach to public speaking instruction.
