Notes

Dr. Jarrod Ventura joined the Communication Studies Department as a full-time lecturer in 2026. His research focuses on LGBTQ+ representation in film and television and how it can reduce stereotypes through positive media psychology interventions. More specifically, positive media psychology uses theories from positive psychology and applies them to film and television. Jarrod’s dissertation research focused on Kama muta, a Sanskrit term for feeling moved by love and the Netflix original series Heartstopper.

His research also examines how gay men express love and commitment across the lifespan through qualitative interpersonal communication research. Some of his work is published in the International Journal of Qualitative Methods, Postdigital Science and Education, and The Research Handbook on the Social Psychology of Media. Similarly, Jarrod has presented his research at the National Communication Association (NCA) and the Western States Communication Association.

Like his research, Jarrod always strives to create an equitable and engaging environment that simulates real-world problems and situations. In 2025, Jarrod earned three teaching awards:  the Outstanding Graduate Student Instructor (GSI) award from Chapman University’s School of Communication, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning Innovative Faculty Recognition Award (a student government association nominated award), and a Canvas spotlight award by Educational Technology Services. In 2026, Jarrod earned the Dr. Jake Liang outstanding Ph.D. student award, for his ability to balance teaching, research, and service equitably.

At the heart of his teaching philosophy is kindness and empathy which can be used to create social change and bring awareness to other systemic issues. When not in the classroom, you can find Jarrod at a reformer or mat pilates class and at the beach.
