Notes

Connie Johnson currently teaches oral communication and public speaking courses at Cal Poly for the Department of Communication Studies. Connie is an outcome-driven professional with over 20 years' experience in academic student engagement, community development, and program expansion. She was key in the establishment of a statewide program that focuses on minority student retention and graduation in the State of Georgia and hopes to bring that same energy to the Central Coast as a Cal Poly professor. She earned her Master's degree in communication studies at the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and her PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. Her dissertation, "Barack Obama: The Rhetoric of a Black President," has been cited in over a dozen scholarly journals and research papers. Her scholarly interests focus on critical race theory and the study of marginalized populations, critical-thinking and ethnic studies.
