Coms Honor Society Book Drive Collects Over 300 Books

Lambda Pi Eta (LPH), the Communication Studies Honor Society, has concluded their 2021 philanthropic campaign! For their yearly service activity, LPH ran a month-long Book Drive for local schools in San Luis Obispo County.

This year, accounting for changes due to COVID-19 and virtual learning, LPH organized and executed a completely virtual Book Drive for 3 local schools along the Central Coast during the month of February: Cambria Grammar School (Cambria), Almond Acres Charter Academy (San Miguel), and Mary Buren Elementary School (Guadalupe).

LPH was able to collect over 300 books and nearly a dozen video recordings for these 3 schools, serving students from grades K through 8. This one-month philanthropic campaign combined the efforts of LPH members, the Communication Studies (COMS) department, and supporters from throughout SLO County.

LPH could not have done this event without the ingenuity of their members. They created and shared social media posts on LPH's Instagram, shared the campaign with their local communities, and organized multiple methods of donation (including utilizing social distanced drop-off hours, mail-in donations, and Amazon Wish List donations). More details about the Book Drive can still be found on the COMS Club website.

Thank you to everyone who was able to participate in this fantastic campaign! LPH organizes yearly philanthropic events and all of the students on the LPH Leadership Board hope to pass along a framework for future LPH and COMS students to engage with local philanthropy and community service. Look out for events with LPH throughout the year on their Instagram.

Lambda Pi Eta (LPH) is the National Communication Association’s (NCA) official honor society at four-year colleges and universities. The organization recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of Communication Studies majors and admits members based on GPA and the number of COMS units taken.
