COMS Club Holds 28th Annual Career Symposium

28th Annual Communications Career SymposiumWhat are you going to do with a communication studies degree?

The question is all too familiar for current students and recent alumni. Some students have an answer, entering college with a specific career in mind and tailoring their education to enhance their future goals. Others, however, can contemplate this for years and still be unsure of where their degree can lead them. To help find the answers, the Communication Studies Club orchestrates the annual Career Symposium under the direction of Dr. Michael Fahs, the club’s faculty advisor.

Each year, communication studies alumni are invited to present the career paths they have chosen along with any insights as to what helped during their time as undergraduate students. Students from all majors are invited and are encouraged to network and ask questions to help match career options with their passions.

Complete with brunch, the 28th annual Career Symposium was held on Sunday, Jan. 25, at the San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club. After the meal, 74 undergraduate students absorbed the wisdom of five alumni presenters. Ranging in topics from conflict management in the workplace to appreciating workplace diversity, the alumni had experience in an array of fields. Each alumnus had the opportunity to share insights and answer any questions from the students, while the students also had the chance to share their own perspectives through interactive presentations.

The day concluded with a presentation from Cal Poly Career Counselor Ashley Eberle, who gave students insight to the best resources available, along with resume and career-seeking tips.

After more than 30 years, the Career Symposium, remains an important resource for students to gain real-world experience and insight into the world of work. If you are interested in sharing your story and experiences, please contact Krista Burke.
